The threesome decided to stop at a local pub to get something to eat while they were waiting to meet Catherine’s contact. Travis was fine with the idea. It had been a long day, and they hadn’t really stopped to eat anything at all as they looked for Karim.

The inside of the restaurant Catherine took them to, named the Green Branch Pub, was dark and surprisingly loud. There was a cluster of a dozen and a half men crowded around the bar, each of them with a pint of beer in their hands leaning toward the television monitors that were mounted near them, staring and pointing at a soccer game that was on television. Catherine gave the bartender, a tall, thin man with a long, narrow face that made him look surprisingly like a grasshopper, a wave as she passed. He called after her. “Hey there, Trina! Haven’t seen you in a while.”

Catherine flipped her hair back behind her collar and gave him a wink. “Been busy, but I’m here now,” she said in a distinctly Irish accent.

The words came out of his mouth just as a red-haired waitress wearing a low-cut shirt arrived at the table. “Hello, Trina,” she said, her tone surly.

“Natalie! It’s been forever. Love the new hair.” Catherine glanced at her and then gave a knowing smile to Travis and Kyle. “These are my friends. Told them I would take them to one of my favorite pubs. How about a round of pints for each of us and menus?” The question came out like more of an order.

Her lips pressed into a thin line. Natalie walked away and came back later with three full beers, setting them down at the table. She pulled three laminated menus out from under her arm and tossed them toward Catherine. Natalie leaned over Travis. “Watch this one,” she said under her breath. “She’s trouble.”

Travis nodded gravely as if Natalie had just told him the location of the Holy Grail. A second later, after Natalie had disappeared, Travis picked up the menu and stared at it. The Green Branch Pub offered a wide
